Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between thermal transfer and direct thermal labels?

There are two types of printing methods used by barcode printers: thermal and direct thermal printing. Thermal printing utilises a thermal ribbon to transfer print onto a label and is the most durable method, producing long-lasting images on a wide range of surfaces.

On the other hand, direct thermal printing does not require a ribbon; instead, it creates the image directly on the printed material. However, this method has a lifespan of no more than a year and is prone to degradation from light, heat, and abrasion.

What are the advantages of having my labels printed externally rather than in-house?

Having labels printed externally rather than in-house provides an extensive range of benefits. If you choose to have your labels printed by our printing bureau team, you have the advantage of having pre-printed labels designed, printed, and verified for quality, then shipped to you when and where you want them.

This service allows us to print labels to the highest standards and in a wider range of designs, sizes, and applications.

I would like to design a label for my products, what should I be considering?

The first thing to consider when designing a product label is whether there are any industry compliance requirements for labels specific to your field. Industries such as pharmaceuticals, food, and chemicals have specific regulations that must be met.

If you’re unsure, our team can provide you with specialist guidance and support through our specialist label design and printing services.

Next, you should consider factors like environmental exposure, adherence requirements, and, of course, the overall design, look, and feel of the label.

What is a matching service and how does it help?

Matching the right ribbons and labels enhances the quality of label printing by enabling faster printing speeds, improving smudge and scratch resistance, increasing print head lifespan, and delivering edge definition.

How do I know which shape and size of roll to order?

The shape and size of the roll is generally determined by the printer being used.

If you’re unsure on the shape and size you require, please advise us with the printer manufacturer and model number, so that we can determine the correct roll size for you.

Is there an order quantity limit?

There’s no upper limit on quantities. However, minimum quantities tend to be determined by a number of factors, including material, processes, and the type of label required.

What’s the difference between a label and a tag?

A label is generally self-adhesive, whereas a tag is generally loose and free-from adhesive.

Tags are supplied individually with a hole for fixing with a string tie or cable. Tags can also be cut to enable them to be wrapped around and clip back into itself.
