QR code labels and smart packaging

QR code labels have become one of the most visible tools in consumer-facing traceability, largely because they put verification directly into a shopper’s hands.

A single QR code can store far more data than a traditional linear barcode, up to around 4,000 alphanumeric characters compared with roughly 20, which is enough to link a product to batch information, certification documents, origin data or a full supply chain journey.

The material a QR label is printed on matters almost as much as the code itself.

A label that fades, peels or becomes unreadable after a few weeks on a shelf undermines the transparency it was meant to provide.   2. Void labels leave the word “void” visible on the product surface once peeled back, which helps prevent fraudulent warranty claims and stops a label being lifted from one product and placed on another.

Tamper-evident labels serve a similar purpose to smart packaging more broadly: they turn a passive piece of packaging into active proof that a product’s integrity has been maintained.

The difference between a tamper-evident label and a standard security label comes down to what happens on removal.

A standard label may simply carry a warning or brand mark, while a tamper-evident label is engineered to fail, tear or reveal a hidden message the moment someone attempts to interfere with it, which is what makes it usable as genuine evidence rather than just a deterrent.

When something does go wrong, a contamination issue, a component fault or a batch that fails quality control, the value of traceability becomes clear very quickly.

A business with accurate batch and lot-level data can isolate exactly which units are affected and where they currently sit in the supply chain. Without that data, a recall often has to cover an entire product line or production run, which is slower, more expensive and considerably more disruptive to customers and retail partners than a targeted response.
